Books, Books, Books

I know in the past I have related my love for children's books. When EJ began reading, at 4, I was just so incredibly pleased and excited. My joy came from what I remembered as a child, my days were full of reading lots and lots of wonderful books. I loved to take a book outside and sit under a tree and read, read, read! I used to sneak books outside, or at bedtime, or anywhere else.

Did you know girls read such different books then boys? I know, it is common sense, when you think about it. Logically boys are going to be drawn to such different things then "yucky" girls. Especially when they are, say, age 7!

Friends, I need help! I'm always on a search for good books for my EJ to read. He's such a reader, like his mama was. But, he's just not that into the same series I was in, as a child. Not to mention that I have the problem of what is appropriate for his age, mixed with his level of understanding and reading comprehension. He's a second grader that can easily read and comprehend 4rth grade material. But, goodness I do not want him to devour fourth grade boy humor... not now.. not ever.

One more thing, before I release you to give me your opinions and thoughts.... I'm a bit picky and hard on what I allow my boys to read. I do not allow any books that include magic in them. Which cancels the Magic Treehouse, Magic School Bus, and anything else magic series. He is currently enjoying the Boxcar series and just found Encyclopedia Brown series. I'd love to transition him into some easy but intriguing biographies (again age appropriate!).

Give me some ideas friends! I'm dying to hear some good ideas!

Daily Routines

Do you have patterns or routines that you follow?

I find that I vary on mine. Consistency tends to be my biggest problem in life. I can keep up with a routine or pattern for about 6 -7 weeks, sometimes much longer. But inevitably something bumps me off of it and then I spend a month or so working on trying to get myself back into it.

School started back up in our home. With it, brought on the routines again. Mornings include chores, breakfast, piano practice, reading, bible time, and school work. Afternoons are a bit freer for the kids. However for me, my afternoons may include lesson planning, running errands, reading blogs, and more.

I have funny little mental routines too. Like I can't drink a cup of coffee in the morning until I drink about 32 oz of water first. Or I tend to take my multivitamin (which is as big as a horses pill and has made me gag several times already) first before I pop any of the other pills in my mouth. And when I read my bible and journal, I like to write down what I read and the specific verse that I am focusing on before I write anything else.

When I get back into a routine or a pattern of life, I feel good, productive, on top of it all. I feel accomplished and as though I am managing things somewhat well. Still, truth be told, I spend alot of mental time writing a list of all the things I haven't accomplished. It rather feels never ending to me.

So, what about you? Do you excel with a routine? Or are you more fly by the seat of your pants kind of girl? Do you struggle with sticking to a daily pattern for more then 2 months or so, like me? Or do you find that life is regular and you know what to expect in your days?

Looking For What????

It wasn't even two nights ago, that CJ called Thrills husband looking for some wisdom and prayer over a certain life circumstance. Of course the Lord used him and gave us a practical way of fighting the issue! Thanks Thrills, husband.

In the meantime, Thrills came up with this nifty little idea called Looking For Wisdom. You can see her post on it here.
We all need ideas, thoughts, how do you do it, where can I find this .... sort of wisdom! And she's right on about what to walk away with and what not to!

So, go check out her site. Especially you moms out there .... this question of the week, could certainly use some creative noisy ideas!!!

Real Worship Time with My Children

One of the questions that was recently posed to me lately was, "Am I starting my day off with my kids in a devotional time to the Lord?"

When I read the question, I thought, ugh... When I think about devotionals, I think about a book that reads a cute little story and reminds you of a scripture verse. Before we go any further, please understand that I am NOT bashing devotionals. My point is that I find it hard to do a devotion with my two rather rambunctous boys. It's not that they can't listen to a book or even answer questions about the story. It's more about the fact that I have not found a good devotional book. We definetly have reading the bible down. But my idea of devotionals is still stuck in a box.

Trying to move forward here....

So, I agreed that my morning was lacking time with the kids and the Lord. I asked the Lord and was reminded of how in the past the kids and I have worshipped together. They love it, I love it, and I KNOW the Lord loves it.

This week, we have worshipped together every morning. I have kid instruments, a keyboard, scarves to dance with, cd's, etc.

To add a little spice to the time together, I put paper on the walls and the kids and I have been drawing with markers during our worship time. (I just can't bring myself to give the kids paint in the carpeted room we are currently doing this in)

It's been so much fun. We sing, dance, draw and color and then pray together. We pray for each other, for daddy, for the girls that will be living with us soon, and for anything else that comes to mind.

Our days have been much better off since they have started with the Lord!

What does your devotional time with your kids look like? What other creative ideas have you heard or done with kids during home worship time? I would love to hear your ideas!
